North Shields Embankment Walkway

Fairhurst is partnering with Principal Contractor Willmott Dixon to deliver ongoing engineering services and landscape architecture on a new embankment walkway in North Shields. The project, funded by North Tyneside Council, forms part of the broader regeneration efforts in North Shields and will provide residents and visitors with a crucial link between the revitalised town centre and the bustling Fish Quay.

Prior to enabling work commencing in September 2022, the steeply sloping site was undeveloped and overgrown with dense vegetation and it was necessary to consider significant geotechnical challenges as part of design development, centring around; global and local slope stability, complex temporary works, risk of unexploded ordnance and restricted access.

The scheme includes a series of sheet pile retaining walls and reinforced earth slopes sympathetically integrated with natural landscaping to create a walkway from Tyne Street to Bell Street, with route options to suit different needs. The walkway will also serve as a platform for local artists to showcase their work.

Our team of experienced engineers and landscape architects have worked closely with the development team to offer multi-disciplinary services from project inception to construction and ensure that all aspects of the project are optimised for performance and longevity.

As the site works progress at speed and piling and earthworks commence, we continue to add value through reactive inspection and temporary works design, services highly valued by the client.
