Over the past 25 years Fairhurst have provided engineering support to some of the largest energy transmission projects in the UK, developing an enviable track record in the successful support and delivery in the first wave of strategic grid improvements and network reinforcements and ancillary support projects.
In 2020, Ofgem announced long term investment programme to transform Britain’s energy networks and support the delivery of renewable energy across the country. Utilising the vast experience gained in providing specialist services to the largest energy companies in the UK, Fairhurst was commissioned in December 2023 to provide technical support services on the ASTI project.
Ofgem introduced the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework, aimed at upgrading the electricity transmission infrastructure throughout Great Britain. These upgrades allow up to 50GW of offshore wind generation to connect to the grid by 2030, helping to advance the UK government’s net zero targets.
The Fairhurst commission was to provide civil engineering design and infrastructure services for five large electrical substations and to provide civil engineering design services for the ASTI Overhead Line (OHL) between Beauly and Peterhead and Peterhead to Spittal.
The commission included the design of 400 kilometres of new maintenance and construction tracks, 600 tower platform designs, 200 construction compounds and a significant proportion of public road improvements securing access for construction traffic.
Fairhurst was also appointed to provide Geotechnical, Transportation, Civil and Structural Engineering services on East Anglia ONE and East Anglia THREE and on Hurlie to Kintore OHL project. Fairhurst has also been appointed for the provision of our full range of engineering services for Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1).
